All Time World Cup!
Yugoslavia were, for most of the 20th Century, one of the sides others feared to face. The region produced a conveyor belt of skilful, entertaining ball-players which earned them the nickname of “The Brazil Of Europe”.
Unfortunately, Yugoslavia was more like France than Brazil when it came to clinching trophies. Two World Cup Semi Finals and runners-up spots in two European Championships and three Olympics are testament to their ‘nearly men’ status. Only in 1960 did they win gold, in the Rome Olympics.
One of the key problems may well have been the players’ questionable commitment to playing under the banner of ‘Yugoslavia’. The deep historical divisions between Serbs, Croats, Slovenians, Macedonians, Bosnians and Montenegrins ran far beyond football, and led to the terrible war which in turn cost Yugoslavia a place at Euro ’92, which they had had an excellent chance of winning.
For the sake of the All-Time World Cup, the separate countries would come together one last time, resulting in an exciting-looking side including Serbia’s Dzajic and Stojkovic, Croatia’s Bobek and Prosinecki, Bosnia’s Osim, Slovenia’s Katanec, Macedonia’s Pancev and Montenegro’s Savicevic.
They may not win the tournament, but they would be thrilling to watch and could beat anyone on their day.
