All Time World Cup!
Schiaffino 10, Eusebio 11, Scarone 50, Francescoli 55, Miguez 59, Futre 68, Ghiggia 87
Yokohama
Ten minutes in, the two nations’ respective greatest players exchanged goals. First Schiaffino outwitted Humberto Coelho and slipped the ball under Baia. Almost straight from kick-off, a most uncharacteristic lack of concentration from the Uruguayan defence allowed Eusebio to blast home from a Torres knock-down.
Uruguay were affronted, and began piling pressure on the suspect Portuguese defence. Luck, poor finishing and good keeping by Vitor Baia kept the scores level until half time but it was becoming increasingly clear that Portugal lacked the really top-notch defenders that other teams in this tournament could call on.
Only Germano, the rock of the early-60s Benfica side, did not look out of his depth. The pressure told five minutes after half time when Scarone nipped in on the blind side of Toni to tap home a Schiaffino cross-shot from close range. That opened the floodgates and within ten minutes the South Americans were out of sight.
First Enzo Francescoli floated a free kick into the top corner, then his replacement, Pedro Rocha, dummied a Varela pass to allow centre forward Oscar Miguez space to score.
Portugal were shell-shocked, and began picking up bookings as frustrations began to boil over. One bright spot came on 68 minutes when Futre, who had been utterly anonymous all game, suddenly sprang to life and scored a great goal after a jinking run past three defenders.
Keeper Mazurkiewicz got a hand to the shot but couldn’t keep it out. It was no more than a consolation goal though, as was emphasised when Ghiggia, on for Scarone, scored Uruguay’s fifth with a couple of minutes to go.
Portugal had ridden their luck a bit against France, but it had run out against a Uruguay side who looked organised, confident and determined.
