All Time World Cup!

SWEDEN

Sweden has a longer footballing history at the top level than most north-European teams, but their challenge would be built around their two finest eras: In the early 1990s Jonas Thern and Thomas Brolin took them to the semi finals of both Euro 92 and the 1994 World Cup.

Even that squad is overshadowed however, by the side which came together in the late 1940s and lasted through the 1950s. They won the 1948 Olympic gold medal, and reached the last four of 1950 World Cup.

This success brought problems however, as foreign clubs swooped to sign Sweden’s star players, notably AC Milan, for whom the so-called “Gre-no-li” forward line of Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm remains legendary to this day. Sweden failed to qualify for the 1954 World Cup due to a ban on players with foreign clubs, but the overseas superstars were allowed back into the fold in time for the 1958 tournament when, as hosts, Sweden reached the final against Didi, Pele and Garrincha.

The manager throughout this period, Englishman George Raynor, would lead the team in the All-Time World Cup. He would ensure the side would be motivated and organised, and there were no obvious weak links, but would they have the individual brilliance to make the difference in tight encounters?
