All Time World Cup!
Gren 12, Nordahl 58; M. Laudrup 60, Elkjaer-Larsson 79
LONDON - Wembley
Whilst over shadowed by the opening game in Paris, this local derby proved to be a fiercely contested game, with no shortage of skill on show. The more experienced Swedes took control early on, with 1950s hero Gunnar Gren tapping home from close range after 12 minutes.
They controlled the game for the rest of the half and the Danes’ confidence looked shaken. They upped their game after the break and began to display some of the attacking verve that made the ‘Danish Dynamite’ team of the 1980s such a joy. Just before the hour mark Sweden seemed to prove their neighbours were out of their depth, when Gunnar Nordahl showed great strength to get on the end of a cross from Liedholm.
Just two minutes later though, the Laudrup brothers played a one-two down the left and elder brother Michael swerved between Bergmark and Nordqvist to pull one back. The tide had turned and the equalizer eventually came with just over ten minutes to play, Preben Elkjaer-Larsson bulleting a header from a Brian Laudrup cross.
Despite a couple of near misses at either end, neither side could fashion a winner.
