All Time World Cup!

SPAIN

Spain have an even more patchy record than their Mediterranean colleagues. Despite arguably the world’s strongest league, and many fine players, Spain, like England, have only managed one trophy, and that on home soil (the European championship in 1964)*. In fact though, Spain’s squad looked a little light at this level. Zamora was probably the best pre-war goalkeeper, and among the best ever. Winger Paco Gento remains the only player to have won the European Cup six times (all with Real Madrid in the 1950s and 60s). Hierro and Suarez had also in their day been hailed as arguably the best in the world in their positions, but the rest of the team could not truly be put in the same bracket as, say, Beckenbauer, Puskas or Charlton.

Many, such as Butragueno and Raul, had never quite lived up to the hype they had shown as youngsters. Perhaps they felt overshadowed at club level by the conveyor belt of expensively imported stars from overseas. Some of those, such as Puskas and Di Stefano, ended up playing for Spain, but would be ineligible here. Another problem that the Spanish national team has always faced is that huge numbers of people simply do not identify themselves as ‘Spanish’. Rather, they are Catalan or Basque or Galician.
