Denmark’s confidence was high after their comeback against Sweden, while Scotland looked nervous, having failed to score a goal or a point so far.
This match was something of a war of attrition –both sides wanted to attack and play good football, but they largely cancelled each other out.
Eventually it was Scotland captain Souness who picked his side up by the scruff of the neck and got them the goal they needed. A driving run past his Liverpool replacement Molby took him to the edge of the box, where Ivan Nielsen simply bounced off him. Afeced with the Olsens, he flicked a quick pass forward to Dalglish, whose first-time back heel was perfectly into the path of his old friend, who had continued his run. The shot nearly took Schmeichel’s head off, but flew past him for the only goal of the game.
Souness blotted his copy book later on by getting booed for a studs-up challenge on Arnesen, so Stein brought Bremner on in his stead. The Leeds man slowed the game down, taking turns with Baxter to stroke the ball around in midfield and maintain possession.
They had a late scare when Brian Laudrup wriggled free of McGrain and bore down on Goram, but the Rangers keeper dived low to his left his deny his club-mate. Other than that, the Scots defence looked fairly solid, and Hansen in particular oozed class.
The win meant a draw would be enough in their final game against the Swedes, while the Danes faced the daunting prospect of beating Brazil to go through
