All Time World Cup!

ROMANIA

Romania would be managed by Emerich Jenei, as the other main contender, Anghel Iordanescu would be needed as a player. The team’s focal point would of course be Gheorghe Hagi, back from suspension after his sending off against Bulgaria in the qualifiers.

Blessed with vision and a great range of passing, he was known as the ‘Maradona of the Carpathians’ for more than just his skills –his dominant personality dictated the form of the whole team. There were other fine players around him though.

Sweeper Belodedici was among the best in the world in the late 1980s and early 90s, and after moving from Steaua Bucharest to Red Star Belgrade, became the first player ever to win the European Cup with two different clubs.

Elsewhere the likes of Gheorghe Popescu, Dan Petrescu and Illie Dumitrescu all played for top western clubs, while strikers Georgescu and Camataru are both former European Golden Boot winners. They may be the group outsiders, but they would cause the opposition problems.
