All Time World Cup!
Portugal completed the group, and no-one was quite sure what to expect from them. Despite their long history, they have only really produced two great footballing eras: the Eusebio-inspired Benfica team who reached the 1966 World Cup semi finals, and the turn-of-the millennium ‘Golden Generation’ of Luis Figo and Rui Costa.
There were plenty of talented individuals in the squad, but as with some of the other teams in this group, Portugal have a habit of failing to deliver at the crunch.
No club has lost more European Cup finals than Benfica, and in the 1960s the national team failed to qualify at all for any tournament other than ’66. The later Golden generation won two youth World Cups but never translated it into senior honours.
When Portugal click they can blow teams away. When things don’t flow, they can be awful.
