All Time World Cup!

POLAND

Poland’s squad would have a very settled look. Almost everyone involved was based on the side which won the 1972 Olympics and finished third in both the 1974 and 1982 World Cups.

Indeed, many Poles contend that they would have won their 1974 semi-final against West Germany if not for torrential rain which disrupted their skilful passing game. That semi was reached even without star striker Wlozimierz Lubanski, who was out injured.

Lubanski emerged in the mid-1960s to play a key role, much as Cruyff did in Holland, in turning an also-ran team into a major footballing force. He was succeeded as Poland’s best player by Zbigniew Boniek, who went on to star for Juventus alongside Platini and Rossi.

Poland could call on plenty of other prolific scorers, such as Pol, Lato and Deyna, while the defence looked solid too, led by Wladislaw Zmuda, who played in five World Cup finals tournaments. They would certainly look forward to another last-match showdown with England.
