All Time World Cup!

MEXICO 1 - HUNGARY 4
H. Sanchez 24; Puskas 19, Hidegkuti 26 & 72, Kocsis 55

MONTEVIDEO – Centenario

Hungary knew only a victory would be good enough against Mexico, and that if Austria got a point against Germany, then goal difference would become vital.

Not surprisingly, they came out of the blocks like a rocket, pinning the latin Americans back in their own half. The pressure eventually told in the 19th minute, when Puskas clipped home a Hidegkuti pass inside the box.

Five minutes later however, they were stunned when Hugo Sanchez scored an almost identical goal, this time from a Cuauhtemoc Blanco pass. While Sanchez ran to the fans to perform his trademark somersault celebration, the Hungarian players looked around at each other, bemused.

Would they crumble? No. Almost straight from the kick-off, Puskas drove forward, skipped between right-back Pardo and centre back Suarez, and pulled the ball back for Hidegkuti to drill home.

After half time, Mexico worked their socks off, trying to give their passionate fans something to cheer, but on 55 minutes Sandor Kocsis effectively sealed the game, his so called ‘Golden head’ rising to power home a header from a Bozsik cross. Mexico knew they were beaten, and Hungary were able to add another from Hidegkuti.

With Austria losing, Hungary were through to a mouth-watering game against either Holland or Argentina. Germany meanwhile were showing ominous signs of their famous tournament mentality. They had qualified fairly comfortably in the end, despite only have to dig deep against Hungary.
