All Time World Cup!

ITALY

Group C would be a hard one to forecast containing three of the most unpredictable teams around. Overall, Italy’s record of four World Cups and a European Championship ranks behind only Brazil, but there have been early exits too, and often a sense that they underachieve. Many times neutrals have felt that Italy could have done so much better if they had only focused on winning rather than on avoiding defeat. The attacking talent was always there, but was rarely let off the leash. Hence successive national coaches seeming to prefer the likes of Daniele Massaro to Roberto Baggio.

The all-time coach, Vitorio Pozzo, won the World Cup twice in the 1930s and would not bow to pressure from anyone. Even he though could not alter the national obsession with defence, and his team would look to build on aback-line that looked virtually impregnable. So strong in fact, that trophy-laden legends such as Gaetano Scirea and Giacinto Facchetti only made the bench. Only time would tell if Pozzo felt such a strong defensive base would allow him to give free reign to attacking talent such as Roberto Baggio.
