All Time World Cup!
Denmark was amongst the very first countries from outside the British Isles to take to football, but strict adherence to amateur ideals meant they were soon left behind, and when talk turns to Danish footballing history, to all intents and purposes we are talking about the late 1970s onwards.
Despite this short period of time spent at the game’s top table, Denmark has amassed an impressive array of individual talent to call on. Attacker Allan Simonsen led the way, starring for Barcelona and Moenchengladbach and being voted European footballer of year in 1977.
By the mid-1980s, Denmark had assembled perhaps their finest team, the “Danish Dynamite” side that thrilled crowds at Euro 84 and Mexico 86 with their brand of fast-paced, free-flowing attacking football.
Elegant centre back and skipper Morten Olsen, midfielder Frank Arnesen and powerful centre forward Preben Elkjaer-Larsen seemed unstoppable. Their skill and exuberance had a soft underbelly however.
After thrashing a ferocious Uruguay 6-1 in Mexico, Denmark collapsed 5-1 against an inferior Spain in their next game. The brightest star of the 1980s side, Michael Laudrup, was missing due to a dispute with team management by the time Denmark had their finest hour at the 1992 European Championships, and it fell to his younger brother Brian to inspire the team. He and goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel were the only players who could really be called world class amongst a team with less skill than in 86 but with a never-say-die attitude that took them from last-minute replacements for Yugoslavia all the way to the
If coach Richard Moller-Nielsen could marry that resolve to the skill and flair of the 1980s side, Denmark could cause any team problems.
