All Time World Cup!
Pele 4 & 60, Garrincha 44,Didi 45; Nordahl 33,Liedholm 72
PARIS – Stade de France
Brazil had not entirely convinced in their first game, and Garrincha in particular ad gone missing in the second half. Today though, the world’s greatest winger was in the mood, and led his side to a comfortable victory.
After just four minutes the ‘Little Bird’ turned Erik Nilsson inside-out and cut the ball back for Pele to blast into the roof of the net from 6 yards. The two continued to run rings around the Swedish centre backs, and even though Nordahl equalised just after the half hour, there was never a doubt that Brazil could score again.
Just when it looked as if the Scandinavians would make it to half time, two goals in injury time put Brazil out of sight. First Garrincha smashed a free kick from 20 yards, then he set up Didi with a back-heel.
Typical Swedish organisation muted Brazil slightly in the second half, but on the hour Pele nodded in a header from a Rivelinho cross. Liedholm pulled another goal back after good interplay with Hamrin and Skoglundl but always looked to have one gear less than Brazil.
