Holland would be renewing rivalries with their old local foes Belgium. Dutch fans often dismiss Belgian football as dour and functional, but that does a disservice to skilful men such as Van Himst, Ceulemans and Scifo. Indeed, the much-praised Dutch team of 1974 only qualified for that year’s World Cup because Belgium had a last-minute free-kick winner wrongly disallowed in their qualifying game.
Tactically, Belgium has tended to favour defence more than Holland have, and in the 1960s Anderlecht were among the first teams to deliberately play an organised off-side trap. Whether such organisation would be enough to see them through in this tournament was open to doubt.
