All Time World Cup!
Apart from Mexico, this group was to be all about central-European local rivalry. Shifting borders and allegiances during the 20th century meant several players represented more than one of Germany, Austria and Hungary.
Indeed, following the Anschluss, Rapid Vienna even won the German Bundesliga in 1941. In the 1930s, Austria’s “Wunderteam” put together by pioneering coach Hugo Meisl was widely seen as the best on the continent.
Semi-finalists in both 1934 and 1954, they may have done even better had they decided to enter in 1938 or 1950. Apart from a brief resurgence led by Hans Krankl in the late 1970s, Austria has never been a force again.
